FICTION - Fiction
@ The Cross, Kings Cross Freight Depot, N1 London
The sumptuous surroundings of The
Cross are the perfect backdrop
for Fiction. The polysexual crowd is totally ‘up-4-it` and it shows
in the style, the dress and the mood of the masses that congregate
under its arches. A perfect blend of the sexes showing plenty of
skin and smiles, the boyz and girlz just love to let go and get playful.
The `Deep End` is where you will find the sounds deep n tribal. In
`The Lounge` the funky house vibe keeps the floor full all nite.

Four out of five stars
There are long runners and there are nights that weave themselves
so seamlessly into the stained bedspread of London clubbing that
they seem to have been there since Tong’s career kicked off
(speculatively at some point in the late 30s).
Claiming to be the first ‘polysexual’ Friday nighter,
Fiction introduced itself to a confused world in early 2000. Whilst
the ethos of a night hoping to combine the hard house scouse and
the camp-it-up contingent in one heated, sweaty mass may be debatable,
Fiction’s commitment to quality house in all of its manifestations
isn’t.
Fiction prides itself – and its pockets no doubt – on
countering the rise of the big, bad über dj, with all nights
relying on a roster of resident djs, who invariably cut their ‘toon’ teeth
and move on to bigger things (world-wide tours, the compilation market
etc). Recent Fiction graduates include spin out sister Cosmo and
funky house cadet Craig Jensen.
Since The Cross’s late 2000 refurb Fiction spreads its wares
across four capacious ex-railway arch spaces (redolent of a hotel
wine cellar), with a 4-4 beat output charting the depths of teeth-gnashing
tribal house (Miguel, Justin, Laurent and Malcom and on rotation
Daz Saund, Lisa German and Carlos Francisco) and funkier sounds (Harj
and Spenser Parker).
The Cross fronts onto Bagley’s – its younger, warehousey,
teen totty and tops off cousin – in a reclaimed Kings Cross
goods yard, and the two institutions represent the polarities of
the London house scene. Fun chalk and matured cheese if you will.
And Fiction’s steady climb to clubbing fame is due, at least
in part, to this popularity with the coveted older, moneyed late
20s crowd.
Cross-goers are partial to a housey, heady night on the tiles but
no longer lithe enough of limb to cope with the visceral excesses
of central London superclubbing. And perhaps worldly-wise enough
not to balk at a six-foot drag queen dancing like an army sergeant
on a pair of dangerously straining Manolos.
The season to visit is summer: the four rooms spill into a trellised,
Greek taverna style courtyard where clubbers lig around in platforms
and lamé, letting off bodily and verbal steam.
